Baseball Comes Up Just Short At Cortland

Kevin Wing knocked in three runs on Thursday.

The St. John Fisher College baseball team dropped a 7-6 decision to nationally-ranked SUNY Cortland on Thursday.    With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 22-11 on the year.   All 11 of Fisher's defeats have been by a total of 14 runs. With the win Cortland, ranked No. 12 in the latest national coaches poll, improves to 29-7-1.

Kevin Wing went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Ross Langevin was 3-for-3 with two runs. Leo Fusilli went 1-for-3 with three runs, while Sean Osterman picked up two hits and two RBI.

Down 7-5 in the top of the eighth inning, Fisher had runners on second and third with no outs but only managed to score one run.   In the top of the ninth inning, the Cardinals went down in order.

Fisher took its first lead of the game, scoring two runs in the top of the six inning, giving the Cardinals a 5-4 lead. Osterman ground out to score Fusilli, tying the game at 4-4 and the Wing singled up the middle to score Langevin.

Cortland, however, came back in the bottom half of the inning and took the lead for good with a two-run homer – the third home run of the day for the Red Dragons.

Fisher will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Utica College.
