The St. John Fisher College baseball team split its doubleheader on Sunday at Scranton University. In the first game, the Royals picked up a 6-5 win while handing Cardinals pitcher Dan Jurik his first loss of the season. Fisher jumped out to the early lead scoring all five of its runs in the second inning. Scranton chipped away and took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Cardinals were led offensively by sophomore Steve Karnyski, with two hits and two RBIs, while senior Jon Gibbs belted a solo home run for his first of the year.
In the nightcap, pitchers Andrew Van Slyke, Adam Pettinella and Mike Craig combined for a four-hitter in a 10-3 Fisher win. Van Slyke went four innings allowing just two runs on two hits and recording seven strike-outs before being relieved by Pettinella.
The Cardinals gave plenty of early support as they jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first taking advantage of three errors by Scranton. After two scoreless innings between the teams, Fisher put seven more runs on the board headlined by a two-run home run off the bat of junior Leo Fusilli.
Craig relieved Pettinella to start the sixth and struck out all six batters he faced to help secure the victory for the Cardinals. Fusilli added a double in the seventh giving him two hits, two RBIs, two runs, a stolen base and a walk. Gibbs also chipped in two hits, two runs, an RBI and a walk in the game. In total, six Cardinals tallied an RBI in the victory.
Fisher returns to action on Friday April 2nd at 1 p.m. when it travels across town to play RIT.
