The St. John Fisher College baseball team came away with a win in the finals of the ECAC Upstate Chasmpionship, as the No. 2 Cardinals
defeated No. 3 seed College at Brockport 12-3 at SUNY Fredonia.
Tournament MVP Phil Pettinella went 3-for-5, as did third baseman Teagen Barresi. Kevin Wing, Steve Karnyski, Matt Klock, and Jared Tiffin each picked up two of Fisher's 16 hits. Geoff Martone allowed just one hit in 2.2 innings of relief action en route to the win.
Although the Golden Eagles (23-24) pulled to within 4-3, the Cardinals scored a run in each of the final four innings, including a five-run sixth, while holding Brockport scoreless to earn the win.
The Cardinals stretched a one-run lead to a 5-3 margin on a triple from Klock in the fifth before blowing the game open in the next frame. After Fusilli drew a walk to load the bases, Barresi came through with a single to score one run, with
Jon Gibbs bringing in another run with a walk. The Cardinals capitalized on a wild pitch to plate the inning's third run. Klock capped off the inning with a two-out triple that scored both Gibbs and Barresi, but was thrown out at third to end the inning.
With the Cardinals up 12-3 after RBI shots from Karnyski and Gibbs in the seventh and eighth, respectively, Fisher's
Jeremy Willard struck out the final two batters to end the game.
