The St. John Fisher College baseball team split a doubleheader with host Stevens Insititue of Technology on Saturday in Hoboken, NJ. After
hanging an 8-3 loss on the Ducks in the opener, Stevens rallied for a
9-3 win in the finale. The Cardinals are now 8-5 overall, 0-2 in the Empire 8.
Powered by a solo homerun from
John Quartironi in the top half of the second, Fisher scored at least one run in all but one frame to take a 5-0 lead through five innings. The Ducks rallied with four runs in their half of the sixth, however, pulling to within one with five consecutive base hits.
Clinging to a one-run lead, the Cardinals got back-to-back homeruns from
Kevin Wing and
Phil Pettinella to lead off the seventh to seize momentum. Three consecutive singles with one out brought one run in for the Ducks in the bottom of the seventh, but a bases-loaded groundout ended the game.
Dan Jurik struck out three batters through five innings to earn the win from the mound. Offensively, Pettinella (two RBI) and Wing (one RBI) were each 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while
Steve Karnyski and
Leo Fusilli each went 2-for-4.
Following another homer from Pettinella in the third, a blast from
Teagen Barresi, and an RBI single from
Matt Klock gave Fisher a 3-2 lead after four, the Ducks blanked the Cardinals the rest of the way. Stevens scored two in the fifth to gain their first lead of the afternoon, before a three-run homerun put the nail in the coffin in the Duck's half of the sixth.
Andrew Van Slyke (3-1) took the loss, with Klock and Fusilli each going 2-for-3 from the plate.
Fisher will battle the Ducks in another doubleheader tomorrow afternoon.
