The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team (4-5-1, 1-2 E8)
fell to visiting Stevens 1-0 this afternoon in an exciting Empire 8 battle.
The first half remained scoreless as the teams fought to keep possession of the ball. The best chance of a tally came with just 11 minutes left in the half, when Stevens' Nolan Sandberg fired a shot that was deflected off the cross bar.
The game saw some spice in the second half as both teams picked up the pace of play. Sandberg opened scoring in the 49th minute, putting in the game-winner for the Ducks. Terrence Johnson fired a pass through three Fisher defenders to reach Sandberg, who slipped it past Fisher's
Adam Durst to take the lead.
The teams traded opportunities for the rest of the half. Four yellow cards dished out within 21 minutes, three to Fisher, stimulated the a sense of urgency in the last 15 minutes, but neither team was able to turn opportunities into goals.
Stevens outshot Fisher 13-8. The win went to Stevens' goalkeeper Zach Carr (9-2-0). Both goalies tallied four saves.
Fisher returns to action Tuesday, when it travels to Wells College for a non-conference match.
