Fisher Keeps Empire 8 Championship Hopes Alive

The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team defeated Alfred University 4-1 on Halloween night.  Fisher improved to 8-6-1 overall and 3-3-0 in the Empire 8 with the win in the game that honored the Cardinal seniors.

Fisher has an opportunity to make the Empire 8 Championship tournament by defeating Elmira College on Tuesday. The game will take place at Elmira and beings at 1:30 p.m.

In the first half both teams would trade goals early, with Fisher taking the advantage with 12:31 left in the period. The go-ahead goal came from a Michael Rooney pass to David Garabedian who used deception by stepping over the ball leaving it for Mike Redmond. Redmond settled the ball and drilled it past the diving keeper into the upper right corner of the net.

Alfred's first goal came just six minutes in, but Fisher evened the scored 12 minutes later. A pass from Luke Lennox found Garabedian this time, connecting for an easy goal from the left side of the box.

Fisher added a couple insurance goals in the second half. Junior Bryan Canty gathered a rebound, off a Lennox shot, in front of the net and sent it past the goalie for a score. A few minutes later Lennox struck again, this time on the scoring end of a pass from Canty.

Lennox finished the contest with four points while Canty finished the game with a total of three.
