Men's Soccer Defeats Utica in Empire 8 Action

The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team defeated Utica College 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Growney Stadium. With the victory the Cardinals improved to .500 both overall and in the Empire 8 Conference (4-4-1, 1-1).

Fisher took control in the first half, scoring three goals by the end of the period. The team's go ahead goal came from junior Matt Guinto when he gathered a pass from classmate Michael Rooney and headed it in the goal. With less than five minutes left in the half, Adam Davies rebounded an errant shot from Liasor Dima and scored his first goal of the season to increase the margin to two.

Both teams traded goals early on. Fisher opened the game with a goal in the first 1:17 after capitalizing on a Pioneers foul. Guinto took the free kick and sent it to Eric Friedman for an easy shot into the lower left corner for a goal. Just under 11 minutes later, Utica scored a goal of its own when Oluwaseun Ilebani ran past three Cardinal defenders to settle a pass from Daniel Garcia and put it past the keeper.

In the second half, Fisher protected its lead with another goal. Another junior, Alex Slater, joined in the scoring efforts when he put in a goal from the right post past the keeper to the lower left corner. Senior Luke Lennox had the assist through box on Salter's goal.

Fisher will return to action tomorrow when it hosts Stevens Institute of Technology at 1 p.m.
