BOX SCORE
The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie with visiting SUNY Geneseo on Wednesday night at Growney Stadium.
Sophomore midfielder
Michael Rooney tied the score in the final minute of regulation after he was taken down in the 18-yard box and scored Fisher's only goal on a penalty kick with just 19 seconds remaining .
Rooney attempted to receive a pass on the right side of the box, but was taken down by his jersey when he attempted to cross up a defender with an inside move. On the ensuing penalty kick, Rooney drove the ball high and hard into the left side of the goal to even the score at one all.
The Cardinals and Blue Knights, who are unbeaten in their last 11 matches (9-0-2) each turned up the heat with physical play in the overtime period. Fisher put the pressure on with three shots, including two near-misses from
Brad Ervin, over the final 10 minutes of action, while keeper
Adam Durst made a diving save in the 107
th minute to keep the Blue Knights from victory.
Durst made a game-high nine saves in the contest, and would have earned a shutout, but a slippery ball on a Geneseo free kick in the 58
thminute slipped past him Geneseo's only goal .
Fisher (5-7-3 overall) will return to action at 7 p.m. on Saturday to take on host Alfred University in an Empire 8 Conference contest.
