St. John Fisher College’s Taylor Hughes (Watertown/Watertown) of the women’s lacrosse team has been named as the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending May 1, 2011. She was also named as the Empire 8 Player of the Week.
Hughes led the Cardinals in scoring in an eventual 17-11 win over the visiting St. Lawrence University Saints on Saturday, tallying seven points on five goals and two assists.
The freshman netted the first three goals of the game over the first seven minutes of play, getting the Cardinals on the board after capitalizing on a free-position shot just 1:13 into the first stanza. Hughes then got the ball to teammate Mary Stimson in front of the net to assist on the fourth goal of the game.
The Watertown native tacked on two more goals, one in each half, to close out her scoring in the game.
For the season, Hughes ranks fifth on the team with 40 goals and nine assists for 49 points.
Saturday’s victory marked the end of the regular season for Fisher, who improved to 11-5 overall. It is the fourth time in the last five years that the Cardinals have earned 10 or more wins in a season.
