St. John Fisher College’s Jordan Gettings (Cohoes/Cohoes), the only senior on the men’s basketball team, has been named the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 19, 2012.
In a 0-1 week for the cardinal and gold, Gettings gave his all in both the final game of the Cardinals 2011-12 season and his last game in a St. John Fisher uniform. Facing East Avenue rival Nazareth College at home on Saturday night, Gettings played 44 minutes, scoring a game-high 23 points in the 68-62 overtime loss. The guard missed a double-double by just one rebound and dished out five assists in the contest.
Gettings shot 10-for-22 from the field while no other Cardinal even attempted a double-digit number of shots, proving Gettings put the team on his back. The senior hit his most crucial shot with time dwindling in regulation and Fisher trailing the Golden Flyers by two.
With 17 second remaining, Gettings drove the lane and made a layup, drawing the contact for a foul and knotting the game at 54-54. Although his free throw would be off the mark, his gutty shot was enough to push the game into overtime.
Gettings finished his career with 1,226 points which places the Cohoes native at seventh all-time at Fisher, becoming just the 19th player in program history to reach 1,000 points.
With the Cardinals losing just one senior, although a veteran leader, the team should return a battle tested group ready for a run in the 2012-13 campaign.
