St. John Fisher College’s Chris Roeder (Victor/Victor) of the baseball team has been named as the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 26, 2012.
When the baseball season opened up this weekend with a doubleheader at SUNY Purchase, Roeder and the Cardinals were ready to go. Fisher won both games, the first game 17-2 while taking the second 7-1. Roeder played in all 14 innings for the Cardinals as the starting shortstop.
In the opening game of the season, Roeder went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. The Cardinals used a 12 run third inning to run away with the victory, starting with Roeder’s spark, drilling a double to drive in Ben Ward for the first run of the inning. Roeder added an exclamation point in the sixth inning, leading off with a solo shot to pick up his third RBI of the contest and Fisher’s 17th run.
The night cap saw more of the same from the sophomore. Roeder got on base with a single in the first before being driven in by Ben Bostick’s inside-the-park home run. Defensively Roeder was solid, combining for five putouts in the games and two assists with no errors.
Fisher will return to action at 3 p.m. on Friday against Rose-Hulman Institution of Technology in Winter Haven, FL as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
