Biel Scores Career-High Five Goals To Lead Women's Lacrosse To 14-3 Win Over St. Lawrence

PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Senior midfielder Emma Biel scored a career-high five goals to lead the St. John Fisher women's lacrosse team to a 14-3 victory over St. Lawrence in its home opener on Wednesday night at Growney Stadium.

The Cardinals improved to 2-0 on the young season, while St. Lawrence opened its season 0-1. This marks the first time Fisher has started 2-0 since the 2021 season.

Biel scored twice in the first half and added three more tallies in the second as she amassed more than three goals in a game for the first time in her collegiate career. She has scored at least three times in each of Fisher's first two games this season.

How It Happened

  • St. Lawrence scored the game's first goal about five minutes in but didn't hold the lead for long. Senior midfielder Sydney Carpenter tied the game three minutes later, and Biel gave the Cardinals the lead less than a minute after that following a St. Lawrence penalty. The Cardinals never looked back from there.

  • Senior midfielder Hanna Kumpf scored twice, while Biel and sophomore attacker Ellie Leisen scored one goal apiece in the second quarter to give the Cardinals a 6-1 lead going into halftime.

  • Biel scored two more goals in the third as the Cardinals pushed their lead to 9-1. Senior attacker Mary Fiorentino had the other goal in the quarter, her first of two in the game.

  • St Lawrence ended Fisher's stretch of nine unanswered goals just before the end of the third. The Saints added their final goal early in the fourth quarter.

  • The Cardinals scored five times in the fourth, with Carpenter accounting for two of those tallies. Fiorentino, Biel and junior midfielder Kaley Griffin had one apiece.

Game Notes

  • Four Fisher players – Biel, Carpenter (3), Kumpf (2) and Fiorentino (2) – had multi-goal games. Griffin and Leisen scored one goal apiece.

  • Carpenter, a two-time All-American, has scored three goals in each of Fisher's first two contests this season.

  • Griffin dished out a career-high three assists. Carpenter also had three, and Leisen had two.

  • The Cardinals finished with a 14-5 advantage in draw controls. Kumpf won a career-high six of them, while junior defender Maddie Lowney accounted for four and Carpenter three.

  • Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Cross made two saves and earned her second win of the season in net.

  • The Cardinals went 16 of 17 on clear attempts and gave St. Lawrence trouble on the other end of the field. The Saints went just 13 of 22 on clears and finished the game with 24 turnovers.

  • Carpenter and Lowney picked up four ground balls apiece to lead the Cardinals, who amassed 22 as a team.

  • The Cardinals outshot St. Lawrence 26-9.
