NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's volleyball team were on the road on Saturday to conclude the regular season with games against SUNY New Paltz and Russell Sage College. The Cardinals swept both matches 3-0 and see their record move to 25-5. The 25 wins are the most in a single season in program history.
Cardinals 3 – Hawks 0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-18)
The first set started off in favor of the Hawks as they took a 9-5 lead. However, Fisher answered with a 6-0 run to jump ahead 11-9. The two teams traded points and a late 4-0 run by the Cardinals gave the team a 20-18 lead that they held onto down the stretch. In the second frame, the two teams were even at 10-10 and then Fisher used a 5-0 run to catapult them to a 25-20 set two victory. The Hawks attempted their comeback in the third, leading 14-12, but an 8-2 run by the Cardinals but them in front 20-16. Fisher concluded the match with five straight points, including three aces by
Gavin Newman.
As a team, the Cardinals had 11 aces.
Gabe La Robardiere led the way with nine kills on a .583 hitting percentage.
Griffin Stella was also efficient, going for six kills on a .455 hitting percentage.
Cardinals 3 – Gators 0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-16)
Fisher took a 9-8 lead in the first set on a
Guillermo Perez kill and they didn't look back, going on a 16-6 run to take the 1-0 advantage. In the second, the Gators were within one point until the 14-13 mark. Kills by
Sonepith Keoviengsamay and
Sam Shutt were catalysts to a 5-1 stretch that served as the launch point to a 25-20 set win. The Cardinals did not fool around in the third frame, using a 9-0 run to take a 16-6 lead. They traded points with the Gators the rest of the way and earned the 25-16 set and match victory.
Shutt led the way with nine kills, hitting for a .538 percentage. Perez was second on the team in kills, registering seven on a .455 hitting mark.
Up next for the Cardinals is the United Volleyball Conference hosted by Vassar College. Fisher goes in as the no. 3 seed and will play on Friday, April 12 against no. 6 Nazareth University. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
