Men’s Volleyball Fall To Golden Flyers In First-Round Of UVC Championships

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's volleyball team competed in the first-round of the United Volleyball Conference Championship. The Cardinals fell behind early and were unable to bounce back, falling 3-0 to Nazareth University.

The Cardinals kept the first set close and used a 4-0 run, with an ace by Gavin Newman and kill by Jake Baker helping take a 12-10 lead. Naz concluded the frame going on a 6-1 run, handing Fisher a 25-21 first set loss. In the second set, kills by Casey Jackson and Gabe La Robardiere kept the set competitive in the first half, but the Golden Flyers began to pull away. A late push was not enough as the Cardinals dropped the second set, 25-17.

As the third set began, Naz grabbed a 13-7 lead, but Fisher began to comeback. Kills by Baker and Griffin Stella pulled the team to within four, and later a 4-0 run brought them to within two. As the Cardinals faced a 20-17 deficit, two kills by Stella and a block by La Robardiere and Stella tied the game at 20 each and 3-0 run put them up 23-21. The Golden Flyers got hot late, scoring four consecutive points and handing Fisher a 3-0 match loss.

The Cardinals now look to the NCAA Tournament selection show, which will take place on Monday, April 15th at 10 am ET.
