LA CROSSE, WI – The St. John Fisher University wrestling program sent one athlete to the 2024 DIII NCAA Wrestling Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse and after day one of competition, that athlete is competing for a spot in the top-8.

Alex Samson is in the 141-pound weight class and entered the competition as the no. 7 seed after a tremendous regular season and earning first-place in the Mideast regional championship. He began the day with a 7-4 win by decision over Dylen Phelps before running into no. 2 nationally ranked Josh Wilson out of Greensboro. Samson fell by way of a 8-1 decision, but set his sights on an All-American honor if he won his next match. The graduate student earned the victory similar to his first match, a 7-3 decision over Bobur Berdiyorov of New England College.

Samson solidified himself as a top-8 finisher, making him the first Cardinal to be named an All-American in wrestling since the early 1980s. The wrestling program was brought back to St. John Fisher University in 2022. He will continue to wrestle on Saturday, March 16, as competition begins at 10 a.m. CT, 11 a.m. ET.
