ITHACA, N.Y. – Two St. John Fisher wrestlers punched tickets to the semifinals in their respective weight classes and six others kept themselves alive with wins in the wrestlebacks during the first day of the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championships at Ithaca College's Athletics and Events Center. The Cardinals (67.5 points) stand tied for third place with RIT in the team race, behind second-place Stevens (86.5 points) and first-place Ithaca (94 points).
Sophomore Trevor Bishop (149 pounds) and junior Paul Lichter (157 pounds) will wrestle for spots in the championship round on Saturday morning. With semifinal victories, they would secure automatic bids to the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Junior Dylan Devine (174 pounds) and seniors Carl Santariello (125 pounds), Derek Bernardino (133 pounds), Trevor Sheehan (165 pounds) and Braydon Vandenberg (197 pounds) will vie for third-place finishes on the backside of their respective brackets on Saturday.
Bishop, who had a first-round bye, advanced to Saturday with an 8-1 decision over SUNY Brockport's Mason Mangialino and an 8-5 decision in sudden victory over Avery Leonard of Oneonta State. He will face Stevens' Cole Handlovic, the No. 1 seed in the 149-pound bracket, in the semifinals.
Lichter had to win three matches to earn his trip to the semifinals, in which he will face SUNY Cortland's Colton Havens. Lichter earned bonus points for the Cardinals with all three of those wins, beating Centenary's Colin Neale 10-0 by major decision, Pitt-Bradford's Ray Worsen 21-4 by technical fall and SUNY Oswego's Steven Ventricilli 12-0 by major decision.
Santariello and Bernardino both won two straight matches after starting the day with losses, while Vandenberg ripped off three consecutive victories after losing his first bout.
Sheehan won his first two matches before losing his third and avoiding elimination with a win on the backside. Devine won his first match, lost in the quarterfinals and kept himself in contention with a win in the consolation bracket to finish the day.
Junior Luke Yorke (141 pounds), sophomore Charlie Rossner (184 pounds) and senior Nathan Coon (285 pounds) have been eliminated.
