ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University wrestling team competed in the first day of the NCAA DIII Mideast Regionals. Three Cardinals will move on to day two of the competition to battle for a ticket to the National Championships next weekend.
Alex Samson earned a pair of wins in the 141-pound bracket, starting with a pin fall win in the second round in 2:23. In the quarterfinal bout against an Alfred State competitor, Samson had a tough match but recorded the 5-4 win by decision.
Braydon Vandenberg was dominant in all three of his matches at 197 pounds. In the first round, he secured a 15-0 technical fall win in just 1:38. In his next match, he secured the win by pinfall in 5:34, before earning another win by pinfall in the quarterfinals. Against Oswego State, it took Vandenberg 4:18 to pin his opponent to advance.
Jackson Burns started well in the 285 pound bracket, with a win by pin fall over Muhlenberg in the final seconds of the first period. Despite losing in the quarterfinals, Burns bounced back in the fourth round of the consolation bracket. He claimed a 17-2 technical fall victory that allows him to advance to day two with an eye on the third-place bout.
Competition starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 2 at RIT.
