BEREA, OH – The St. John Fisher University wrestling team were on the road at Baldwin Wallace University to compete in the annual John Summa Invite. The Cardinals had a wide range of success and it led to a third-place finish as a team.
Daniel Parkulo earned second-place in the 125-pound weight class. After a first-round bye, he won by fall in 3:55, before earning a 10-3 decision in the quarterfinals. In the semi-final, he defeated Alfred State wrestling, Mason Drew, by pin in 6:14. Parkulo fell in the first-place match to the no. 4 nationally ranked wrestler from Baldwin Wallace, Jacob Decatur.
In the 133-pound bracket,
Mason Welch and
Derek Bernardino scored points for the Cardinals, taking sixth and seventh place respectively. Welch dropped his fifth-place match due to a medical forfeit, while Bernardino earned a major decision win in his seventh-place bout.
Alex Samson took first place in the 141-pound class. He began his day with a win by fall at 2:38 before using a 21-4 technical fall victory to advance to the quarterfinal bout. Samson stayed hot with a 4-1 decision and then dominated in the semi-final match, securing a spot in the first-place match with a 15-0 technical fall. He used another technical fall to earn the top spot, this time it being a final score of 18-3.
In the same bracket,
Luke Yorke took seventh place to score 13.0 points for Fisher. He won back-to-back matches to start the day, the first by way of 18-6 major decision and then a 17-2 technical fall. In the seventh-place match, he earned a win by medical forfeit.
Joshua Maslyn took home fourth place in the 149-pound weight class. He won back-to-back matches after a bye before falling in the semi-final match to West Liberty wrestler, Nico Taddy. Madlyn bounced back to earn his spot in the third-place match, where he was on the wrong end of a 7-3 decision.
In the 157-pound bracket,
Paul Lichter secured sixth place to collect 14.5 points for the team. Lichter started hot by winning his first two matches by fall (1:34 in the first, 0:56 in the second) before winning by tech fall in the quarterfinal. Lichter fell in the fifth-place match to settle for sixth place.
Jeremy Devine had a strong performance, coming in third place in the 165-pound bracket. Despite dropping his second match of the day, Devine bounced back with a win by tech fall, win by decision and win by DQ to advance to the third-place match. He won by forfeit over Ohio Northern to secure third.
Braydon Vandenberg came in fifth-place in the 197-pound weight class. After a bye, he won his first match by 9-5 decision and then won by fall (1:33) in the quarterfinal. After dropping a pair of matches he bounced back with a 9-4 decision to take fifth.
