Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Cardinals Secure Sweeps Over Bengals and Hobart

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's volleyball team competed in day two of the Bengal Invite hosted by Buffalo State College. The Cardinals secured two 3-0 sweeps, defeating the host Bengals and Hobart College. The results move their record to 11-1 on the season.

Fisher 3 – Bengals 0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-21)
The Cardinals used a pair of big runs to jump in front 20-14 and then traded points the rest of the way to take the 1-0 lead. After falling behind in the second set, kills by Jake Baker and Griffin Stella helped put the team back on top. A late 7-3 run helped them secure the second set and a 2-0 advantage. In the third, Fisher wasted little time getting an advantage, with a kill by Tyler Cohen helping them go in front 12-6. Despite a push by the Bengal, the Cardinals secured the sweep.

Baker continues his strong season, collecting 16 kills on a .625 hitting percentage. Cohen was the second highest point scorer, adding eight kills of his own.

Fisher 3 – Statesmen 0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-20)
Ian Rauh and Casey Jackson helped the Cardinals jump out to an 8-2 advantage in the first set and rode that momentum to an early win. The second frame saw another early lead, with kills by Jackson and Stella along with a variety of Hobart errors, helping the team go in front 11-5. The Statesmen cut their deficit to four but a late 7-3 run by Fisher secured the second set. In the third, it was Hobart that jumped out to a 6-2 lead, but points by Rauh and Gavin Newman evened the score at 8-8. From there, Fisher was able to put together a run that had them in front 22-16, before winning the set and the match.

Rauh led the way with 11 kills on a .786 hitting percentage along with three total blocks. Jackson added nine kills of his own, while adding two service aces.

The Cardinals head to New Jersey for their next set of matches, taking on Eastern University and Ramapo College on Friday, Feb. 9 at the Bradley Center. The first match is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
