PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's volleyball team were at home on Saturday for a tri-match, hosting Elizabethtown College and SUNY Poly. The Cardinals took care of business, sweeping both opponents 3-0 to move their record to 17-1 on the year.
Fisher 3 – Elizabethtown 0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-16)
The Cardinals got off to an impressive start, claiming a 7-1 lead thanks to kills by
Griffin Stella and
Jake Baker. Fisher rode that early run to a 25-16 set one win. In the second frame, the Cardinals once again took an early lead, but the Blue Jays fought back to even the set at 9-9. Back-to-back kills by
Casey Jackson and Baker ignited the team to a 16-9 run the rest of the way to secure the 2-0 lead. The third set was closely contested in the beginning, with Fisher holding a slight 9-8 advantage, but an 11-3 run blew the game open, and the Cardinals secured the sweep.
Baker and
Ian Rauh both tallied nine kills. Baker did so with a hitting percentage of .389, while Rauh recorded a percentage of .400.
Gavin Newman had 21 assists in two sets and added four service aces.
Evan Ingerick came in to handle duties in the third set and added 11 more assists.
Fisher – SUNY Poly (25-15, 25-12, 25-13)
The Wildcats were in front 4-3 in the first set, but a 5-0 run by the Cardinals gave them a lead they did not surrender the rest of the way. Kills by Baker and Jackson stopped any runs by Poly and the final blow was delt by Rauh to secure the 25-15 set one win. In the second frame, Fisher did not waste time, jumping in front 9-1. Later in the set, an 8-2 run put the Cardinals ahead 22-10 and later won the set to go in front 2-0. The third frame saw a similar start as the second, with Fisher leading 9-1 right away. The momentum continued with he team leading 23-9 at one point before winning 25-13, and adding another sweep to their record.
Stella and Rauh had perfect hitting percentages, recorded six and five kills respectively. Newman added another five service aces, while distributing 16 assists. Jackson, Baker and
Guillermo Perez all had four kills, and Ingerick came in during the third set and recorded 11 assists of his own.
The Cardinals hit the road on Wednesday, Feb. 28 to take on Hobart College. Game time is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
