Men’s Volleyball Comeback To Beat Hobart, 3-2

GENEVA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's volleyball team faced a 2-1 deficit against no. 16 ranked Hobart College, but the no. 7 ranked Cardinals won the last two sets to earn the 3-2 win. Fisher now holds a 18-1 record going into an important weekend.

Hobart claimed the early lead, but an error and service ace by Jake Baker evened the score at 2-2. The two teams traded runs all throughout the set, but the Statesmen began to pull away down the stretch and claimed the 1-0 advantage after taking the frame, 25-23. In the second set, the Cardinals came out firing, with kills by Baker and Ian Rauh helping the team jump in front 7-2. Fisher did not surrender that lead and used a 5-0 run down the stretch to even the match with a 25-18 set two win.

After dropping the third frame, 25-20, Fisher needed to bounce back in the fourth and kills by Gabe La Robardiere and Casey Jackson helped give the team a lead they carried to the end. The team went on to win 25-18 thanks to a service ace by Jackson. In the fifth and final set, the Cardinals faced a deficit until the half-way point when a Hobart error helped ignite Fisher. After a mistake by the opposition, Gavin Newman recorded an ace that evened the score at 8-8. From there, the team went on a 7-3 run to take the fifth set and the match.

Baker led the team in points with 14.5, doing so with 10 kills, three service aces and three assisted blocks. Jackson and Rauh each recorded 12.0 points. Jackson did it with nine kills, two aces and two assists blocks, while Rauh tallied eight kills, four blocks assists and two aces.

Up next for Fisher is a tri-match on Saturday, March 2 that will see no. 9 ranked Vassar and no. 3 ranked Southern Virginia come to campus. Games are slated to begin at 12 p.m.
