Weekend Preview: Men’s Track & Field Prepare to Compete in Empire 8 Championships

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men's and women's track and field teams will compete in the two-day Empire 8 Championship meet. The meet will begin on Friday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. and pick back up on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. Both days will take place in Pittsford, N.Y., and hosted by Nazareth College.

The Cardinals previously competed in the Nazareth College – Conference Tune-Up meet.
 
For the men, Sean Cochrane and Ivan Lopez-Testillano led for the Cardinals. Cochrane competed in the high jump, where he jumped 1.91m to take 2nd overall. Cochrane's best jump is 1.96m, where he sits 2nd in the Empire 8 and is tied for 6th in the region. Lopez-Testillano competed in the triple jump, where he jumped 14.52m to take 1st place overall and further his lead to over a meter on the E8 leader board, currently sitting 5th best in the nation.
 
Athletes to Watch
On the men's side, Ethan Billings currently sits in 1st for the 5000m, 2nd in the 3000m, and 4th in the mile. Matthew Stasiw leads the Empire 8 in the long jump, with a mark of 7.06m. Brady Bishop leads in sprinting, sitting at 3rd in the 200m, 5th in the 400m, and 8th in the 60m. Cole Ferris holds a time of 51.15 to put him second in the 400m, while also being 8th in the 200m.
The men will look to claim their fourth-straight Empire 8 Championship, while the women also look to collect their fourth-straight Empire 8 Championship.

Three-time defending champion St. John Fisher is looking for its sixth Empire 8 crown in 2023, having also won in 2014-15, 2017-18 and 2019-20, 2021 and 2021-22. The Cardinals enter the meet with the current top performer in three of 17 events.
 
Ivan Lopez-Testillano is the E8 leader in the triple jump, with a leap of 14.52 meters, which is also 15th best in Division III. Matthew Stasiw is ranked 22nd in the long jump at 7.06 meters, while Sean Cochrane is ranked inside the top-50 in the high jump. Myles Andersen will also contend in the 800-meters. Bryant DePaull is a top candidate in the high jump and long jump, while Brandon Kaplan and Jack Bickford will look to score in throws
 
Sprinters Curtis Cuvilly, Brock Young, Trenton Wynn and Bishop Brady will look to gain valuable points, while Cole Ferris is also a standout in the 400-meters. Ethan Billings is the current Empire 8 leader in the 5,000-meters and will be a strong candidate in the 3,000-meters and mile.. The trio of Josiah Blowers, Maxwell Blowers and Zach Piper are set to contend in the heptathlon.
