Weekly Preview: Women’s Basketball Prepare for Empire 8 Championship Weekend

PITTSFORD, NY – The No. 1 seed St. John Fisher University women's basketball team will take on No. 5 Elmira College in the Empire 8 Championship Semi-Finals on Friday, Feb. 24. If the Cardinals advance, they will compete for the Empire 8 Championship in the finals on Saturday, Feb. 25 for a 3:00 p.m. start. The second semi-final game will be No. 3 Russell Sage vs. No. 2 Nazareth. All three games will take place at Manning & Napier Varsity Gym.

Fisher enters the weekend as the top seed in the tournament, thanks to a record of 23-2 and a conference record of 18-0, winning the last 19 games overall. The Soaring Eagles enter the week with an overall record of 15-10 and a conference record of 10-7. Elmira won their previous game against Houghton University, in the Empire 8 first round. The Gators hold an overall record of 17-9 and a conference record of 12-6. The Golden Flyers lost their previous game against Sage, and hold an overall record of 18-7 and a conference record of 14-4.

Scoring their way to first: Entering the weekend, Fisher averages the most points-per-game, scoring 80.8, 11.6 more than Russell Sage. Through 25 games, the Cardinals have the highest field goal percentage, holding an average of 45.3%.

Last time they faced off: Just under a month ago, Fisher and Elmira faced off, with the Cardinals collecting a 74-51 away victory. Fisher have won their previous 17 games against the Soaring Eagles, a streak that began in 2014.

Just last week, the Cardinals and Gators faced off, with Fisher taking home a 78-58 victory. Fisher has never lost to Russell Sage, a 14-game winning streak that began in 2018.

On Feb. 11, the Cardinals and Golden Flyers faced off at Nazareth, with Fisher collecting a close win of 78-68. The Cardinals have won their previous five games against the Golden Flyers.

Player to Watch: This week's player to watch is Kaitlyn Walker. Last week, Walker recorded a double-double against Russell Sage, scoring 18 points and ten rebounds, while also having four steals and two blocks. Walker continued her success into the win against Hartwick, leading in rebounds with 11, scoring nine points, and collecting two assists.

Expect an exciting week as the Cardinals look to collect their second-consecutive Empire 8 Championship title.
