PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University women's basketball team begin the early stages of Empire 8 play this weekend, taking on Hartwick College and Russell Sage College. The Cardinals were an undefeated 18-0 in conference play last season, on their way to back-to-back conference championships.
 
Last Time Out
Fisher took on one of their toughest opponents so far this season in Ithaca College. They kept pace with the Bombers in the first half, eliminating an early eight-point deficit to finish the first quarter tied at 13, and the score remained tied after a back-and-forth second quarter to send the teams into halftime tied at 31. Ithaca pulled ahead in the second half, outscoring Fisher 38-24 in the final 20 minutes of the game. 
 
Know Your Foe, The Hawks
The Cardinals are 50-17 all-time against Hartwick College and 25-11 since 2005. Fisher won both games against the Empire 8 foe last season, including a 64-36 victory at Hartwick's Lambros Arena.
 
The Hawks enter the week 1-4 on the season, starting their campaign with four straight defeats before defeating SUNY Morrisville last Tuesday, 82-60. Hartwick hosts Cortland this week before welcoming Fisher. 
 
Know Your Foe, The Gators
Fisher is either 14-0 or 18-0 all-time against the Sage Gators, depending on whether you count the Cardinals' four wins against Russell Sage in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, which came before Sage merged its three schools into one. 
 
Regardless, the Cardinals have never lost to the Gators, and they'll look to continue their success against a team that enters the week with a 1-3 record. Sage faces SUNY Cobleskill and Nazareth before hosting Fisher on Saturday.
 
What's Next
After this week's games, the Cardinals face Penn State Berks and host Cortland before winter break.
