CLEVELAND, O.H. - The St. John Fisher University wresting team traveled to Case Western Reserve University on Saturday January 21 to compete in the Dr. Si Ostrich Duals. They competed against Defiance College, Albion College, Adrian College and Case Western Reserve University.
Match #1 Against Adrian College
Starting out the day for the Cardinals, at 125, Carl Santariello won his bout by a 7-6 decision, to put the team ahead 3-0. In the 133 weight class, Mason Welch was defeated by his opponent by a 7-2 decision. Torin Bishop was up next to wrestle in the 141 weight class, he took a loss by way of a 5-1 decision. At 149, Mason Wersinger defeated his match up by a pin fall at 2:05 to help Fisher reclaim the lead at 9-6.
Wrestling at 157 was Joshua Maslyn, won by a 11-6 decision and moving ahead 15-6 . Logan Palmeri weighed in at 165, coming up short to his opponent by a 5-0 decision. Otto Davison was up next in the 174 weight class, he defeated his match up by a sudden victory and the Cardinals claimed a 15-9 advantage. Fisher dropped their final three matched and they fell to Adrian by a final of 21-15.
Match #2 Against Albion College
Santariello wrestled at 125, getting defeated by a close decision of 7-5. At 133 Welch won by a forfeit and the Cardinals moved ahead 6-3. Wrestling at 141, Bishop was defeated by a major decision of 11-2. Wersinger came in at 149, defeating his opponent by a pin fall at 2:05 and once again Fisher moved in front, 12-7. Maslyn fell short at 157 by a 11-10 decision. Palmeri lost by a pin fall at 5:31. At 174 Davison was defeated by a 18-5 major decision. Coon came up short against his opponent by a pin fall at 4:57. Last to wrestle was Lestrange at 197, he was defeated by a technical fall of 17-2. Albion defeated the Cardinals 37-12.
Match #3 Against Defiance College
To start off the match was Santariello at 125, he won by forfeit. At 133, Derek Bernardino came up short to his opponent by pin fall at 5:19. Zachary Ash was up next at 141, he defeated his opponent by pin fall just 36 second in. At 149, Wersinger followed right behind, also defeating his match up by a pin fall at 1:30. Maslyn fell short at 157 by a 4-1 decision. Wrestling at 165, Palmeri lost by a pin fall at 1:05. At 174, Davidson won by forfeit. Coon came up short at 184, he lost by a 13-5 major decision. Lestrange up again at 197, defeating his opponent by a pin fall 54 seconds in. Last to wrestle at 285 was Cawley, he was defeated by a 5-2 decision. The Cardinals defeated Defiance 30-22.
Match #4 Against Case Western Reserve University
At 125, Santariello started out strong for Fisher with a 8-6 decision win over his opponent. Next at 133 was Welch, he defeated his opponent by pin fall at 1:26. Ash came up just short at 141, losing by a pin fall at 3:24. At 149, Wersinger won by a 10-4 decision. Maslyn got his first win of the day at 157, winning by pin fall at 2:53. Palmeri cam up short at 165, losing by a 11-2 major decision. At 174, Davison was defeated by a 16-4 major decision. Coon was up next at 184, he fell short with a 12-2 major decision. Lestange at 197, couldn't hang on, ending in a loss of 11-1 major decision. Last to wrestle for the day was Cawley at 285, he claimed his first victory of the night with a 4-3 decision. Case Western Reserve defeated Fisher 22-21
Up next for the Cardinals, they will travel to Erie, PA on Jan. 27th to compete against Penn State Behrend. The match is set to start at 7pm.
