PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University women's soccer team is set for a string of six straight games against Empire 8 teams to wrap up their season. It begins this week with games against Utica University and Medaille University.
Fisher (5-2-3, 3-0 Empire 8) is set to take on Utica University (3-6-2, 1-1-1 Empire 8) at home on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. before playing at Medaille (1-7-1, 0-4 Empire 8) on Oct. 15 at 6 p.m.
Defense Brynes: Through three conference games, Fisher has yet to allow a goal, beating Hartwick College and Russell Sage College 1-0, while besting Houghton 2-0.
The Cardinals have already recorded six shutouts this season, topping their total from last year of five. First year goalie, Avery Brynes, has been credited with the six shutouts, which paces the Empire 8. Even more, Brynes has recorded a 0.813 save percentage, good for second in the conference.
Their sixth shutout came Saturday in a crucial win over Russell Sage. The win has positioned the Cardinals in first place in the Empire 8, with the Gators in second place. The Cardinals opponents this week - Utica and Medaille, sit in seventh and tenth place in the conference respectively.
Scouting the Opponents: Last October, Fisher bested Utica by a final score of 2-1. The winning goal came in the 86th minute from
Emma Osterhoudt on her third goal of the season. The score was assisted by
Kayla Rhude. The Cardinals totaled 19 shots including 13 on goal, while Utica finished with nine shots, six of which came on goal. Since 2005, Fisher holds a 4-4-1 home record against the Pioneers.
The game against Medaille will mark the first time the two teams have met.
Player to Watch: The player to watch this week is
Kate Rachwal, the sophomore midfielder. Rachwal has one goal and one assist this season on two shots on goals, both of which have come during the month of October. After missing time at the beginning of the season, Rachwal has played the last four games for the Cardinals.
