HAMBURG, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team looked to be in mid-season form on Tuesday as the Cardinals, who are receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com national poll, overwhelmed Hilbert College, 86-25, in the team's season opener inside the Hafner Recreation Center. With the win, Fisher improved to 1-0 while the Hawks slipped to 0-2 overall.
The Cardinals led wire-to-wire with All-American
Kaitlyn Walker pacing the way for Fisher with 12 points including six from the free throw line. Freshman
Katie Moravec chipped in with 10 points while
Miranda Lynch lit it up in the second half and finished with 12 points in all.
Sidney Tomasso dropped 11 in her collegiate debut including three from downtown while
Claire Kruszka, who was named the Empire 8's Rookie of the Year at the conclusion of last season, added eight points in the win.
Bryn Wormley and
Lauren Petrie each netted seven points for Fisher off the bench while
Leah Koonmen returned to the court and produced five points for head coach
Melissa Kuberka's squad.
The Cardinals stymied the Hawks at every turn as Hilbert's 25 points over 40 minutes marked the lowest output of any opponent since the Cardinals allowed just 24 points against Elmira during the 2018-19 season.
The Cardinals are back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to Hamilton College to take on the Continentals in a non-conference tilt.
