Socker Powers Field Hockey to Win over William Smith in Season-Opener

GENEVA, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Bre Socker put on a show on Friday as the St. John Fisher College field hockey team began its 2018 season with a 3-1 win over William Smith College in a non-conference clash at McCooey Field.

With the win, the Cardinals closed out the day at 1-0 while the Herons fell to 0-1 in the early goings.

Head coach Victoria Bothner's squad got on the board first in the 14th minute when Lauren Fazio found Socker on a feed from a penalty corner to stake the visitors to a one-goal lead.  William Smith answered nearly nine minutes later with a give-and-go goal of its own to level the action at 1-1.

Coming out of intermission, Socker and Fazio paired up again in the 38th minute as Socker found the back of the cage on a pass from the top of the arc to score what turned out to be the game-winning tally.  The Cardinals would add to their advantage in the 44th minute when freshman Gianna Palma drew the keeper away from the cage before dumping it off to Socker on the edge to bring it to 3-1 in Fisher's favor.

Overall, the Cardinals were outshot by the Herons, 11-10, however, Fisher made the most of its opportunities with eight shots on goal.

Senior goalie Ashley Maynard picked up her first win of the season and the 30th of her career after allowing just one goal and coming away with five saves in all over 70 minutes of play.

Fisher is back in action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when it continues non-conference play with a matchup against the Williams College Ephs.  The game will be played at a Hamilton College in Clinton.
