Women's Soccer Undone By Late Overtime Goal Against Fredonia

PITTSFORD, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team fell in the second overtime period, 1-0 to the SUNY Fredonia Blue Devils in non-conference matchup. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 2-5 on the season, while the Blue Devils improve to 3-4 overall.

Heading into halftime, Fisher and Fredonia were knotted in a scoreless tie. The Cardinals dominated the offensive side of the ball in the first half, outshooting the Blue Devils 6-4 with four of those shots being on goal. The Fisher defense did not let up a single Fredonia shot on goal in the first 45 minutes of play.

Jackie Romano led the charge for Fisher, recording three of those six shots. Chandler Stephany, Hannah Buschner and Logan Chase also fired a shot of their own.

The end of regulation brought the same results, as the Cardinals and Blue Devils still stood scoreles going into overtime. Each team added another four shots in the half, with Fisher edging Fredonia, 10-8 in shots at the end of regulation. Four different Cardinal players blasted a single shot in the second half. Fisher also registered three corner kick attempts.

The first overtime period was marked by a single Fredonia shot, eventually stopped by Fisher goalkeeper, Melissa McGowan. Fisher was able to generate a single corner kick attempt in the period, with no result.

The scoreless tie would be broken in the 103rd minute of play, when a Fredonia player would gather a Fisher turnover and breakaway from the defense, eventually finding the back of the net for the game winning goal.

At the end of the match, Fredonia would take the edge over Fisher outshooting the Cardinals 11-10. Romano would finish the game leading the Cardinals with three shots.

McGowan would take the loss for Fisher, recording two saves in all 103 minutes of play.

The Cardinals return to action at 5 p.m. on Saturday back on their home turf at Growney Stadium, taking on the Highlanders of Houghton College in their first Empire 8 Conference match showdown.
