Elmira Defeats Women's Basketball On Late Free Throws

The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team, which led for the majority of the contest, saw Elmira sink two free throws with one second remaining to hand the Cardinals a 61-59 loss. 

With the defeat Fisher falls to 7-4 overall and 0-1 in Empire 8 play while Elmira moves to 6-2, 2-0 respectively.

After leading for the majority of the second half, Fisher saw Elmira take a 54-51 lead  with 2:55 remaining.  

That lead would not last long as Fisher scored the next six points to take a 57-54 advantage.  


Elmira cut the deficit to 57-56 with under one minute to play.  Following an Elmira foul, McKenzie Bezon knocked down two free throws to give Fisher a three-point advantage.  

On the ensuing possession Jessica Zoltowski converted a conventional three-point play to tie the game at 59 with :26 seconds remaining.

After an offensive foul on Portia Velasco, Liz Forrest was fouled with 1.2 seconds remaining, knocking down both free throws to seal the victory.

The game was tied early at 8 apiece, but Fisher went on a 11-1 run, fueled by six points from Camaryn Buckner, to take a 19-9 lead at the halfway point of the first half.  

However Fisher struggled from the field over the final 10 minutes, as Elmira outscored the Cardinals 17-8 to cut the visitors lead to 27-26 at the half. 

Buckner led all scorers with 24 points and eight rebounds.  Sydney Bloomstein started the second half connecting on back-to-back old-fashioned three-point plays en route to 13 points and five boards.

Mary Kate Cusack chipped in 13 points for the Cardinals. Bezon led Fisher with seven assists.

Fisher will play its Empire 8 home-opener at 8 p.m on Friday hosting Hartwick College.
