Poor Shooting Dooms Women's Basketball In Loss To Ithaca

The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team scored just 42 points and dropped a 62-42 decision to visiting Ithaca College on Saturday.

With the loss, Fisher falls to 8-6 overall and 1-3 in the Empire 8 Conference, while Ithaca improves to 11-4, 4-1.

It was a back-and-forth first half that featured six lead-changes and four ties.  The Bombers jumped out to an 11-2 lead, but Fisher scored the next 11 points as Lauren Allen hit a 15-foot jumper with 9:22 left to put the Cardinals up 13-11.  Fisher led 19-18 with just over three minutes left in the first half, but Ithaca ended the period with a 10-2 run to take a 28-21 lead at the break.

The Cardinals never regained the lead in the second half.  Fisher trailed by just five at 41-36 with 10:22 after a made free throw from Camaryn Buckner, but Ithaca pulled away, outscoring Fisher 15-4 over the next eight minutes.

Fisher struggled shooting the ball, connecting on just  26.3% (15-of-57) of its attempts, including 2-of-19 from 3-point range. The Bombers also held a decisive 45-27 advantage in rebounds.

Buckner finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, marking her 26th career double-double.  Portia Velasco totaled 11 points, five steals and four assists, while Mary Kate Cusack also scored 11 and added three steals.

Fisher will return to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday and will host Utica College.
