Cardinals Defeat Houghton to Continue Win Streak

Box Score

The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team defeated provisional Empire 8 Conference member Houghton College 64-41 on Fisher's Bobby Wanzer Court Saturday afternoon.  With the win, Fisher's overall record improves to 10-10, while Houghton falls to 8-9. The contest does not have an impact on Conference records or standings.

Fisher controlled the game from the get-go, opening with an 11-2 run over the first 5:08. After Camaryn Buckner made a free throw to open the scoring in the first minute, the Cardinals would never trail.

Fisher built a 20-point lead to head into the locker room up 37-17 at the break.  Mary Kate Cusack was hot from the floor as she shot 5-for-7, and 3-for-4 from behind the arc, tallying all of her 13 points in the half.

The Cardinals did not back down in the second half, jumping out to their largest lead of the game at the 14:30 mark of the second stanza when the team led by 24 points at 47-23.

Shooting efficiency played a big role in the game, as the Cardinals shot 40% from the field compared to Houghton's 29%.  Brooke Seavitt, who finished the game with 10 points, was 3-for-4 from the floor and a perfect 2-for-2 from both three-point range and the free throw line.

The Cardinals, who have now won five-straight games, also picked up 11 steals in the game.

Sydney Bloomstein finished the game with 12 points, while she and Buckner led their team with eight boards a piece.  Cassie Pope dished on four assists to go along with her six points on the day.

Fisher will return to the court at 6 p.m. on Friday when it travels to play Elmira College.  In the teams' first meeting of the year, the Cardinals defeated the Soaring Eagles 66-64 in overtime after Cusack hit a three-pointer with one second remaining.
