The St. John Fisher College women's basketball program won its third straight Empire 8 Conference game, as the Cardinals held on for a 66-64 win over host Alfred University on Tuesday night.
With the win, Fisher improves to 8-10 overall and 5-4 in the Empire 8.
Fisher seemed totally in control early on. The Cardinals led 40-22 at the half after a traditional three-point play from
Camaryn Buckner as time expired.
Alfred, who trailed by as many as 19 points, chipped away at the lead, cutting the margin to single digits midway through the half. The Saxons hit a 3-pointer with 23.3 seconds left and a missed front end of an one-and-one bonus free throw shot by Fisher gave Alfred the final offensive set.
Alfred got off a layup and retained the possession when the missed shot caromed off a Cardinals' player and out of bounds. With 3.5 seconds remaining the Saxons inbounded the ball after a time out but a mid-range jumper wouldn't fall as Fisher collected the win.
The Cardinals were paced by
Sydney Bloomstein's 16 point performance while Buckner recorded a double-double, scoring 15 and grabbing 10 boards, five of which came on the offensive glass.
Mary Kate Cusack also chipped in 15 points.
The win by Fisher came despite leading scorer
Portia Velasco scoring no points for the first time in her 43 game collegiate career. Although Velasco did not score and fouled out, she led the defense early, deflecting several passes, collecting five steals, four rebounds and three assists in the outing.
Fisher returns to action at 6 p.m. on Friday and will host Utica College. The Pioneers, who lost to Nazareth College tonight, defeated Fisher in overtime earlier in the season.
On Saturday, Fisher hosts Houghton College at 2 p.m
