Box Score
The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team tied the Nazareth College Golden Flyers 1-1 on Tuesday night, breaking Nazareth's 20-game winning streak in contests against Fisher. It was the Cardinals second-straight overtime contest, as they also tied with The College at Brockport on Wednesday. With the tie, Fisher, now 2-0-2 and 0-0-1 in the Empire 8, is off to its best start in the 13 seasons under head coach
Jill McCabe. This is also the third tie of the season for Nazareth, as they move to 1-1-3 and 0-0-1 on the year.
After a scoreless 86 minutes, it only took a minute and two seconds for two goals to be scored. The Cardinals were the first to strike, as
Krista Pilla sent a long cross into the box that was deflected towards the goal by a Nazareth defender. Golden Flyer goalkeeper Abbie Carey was forced to come up with a diving save, pushing the ball off the crossbar but to the feet of
Alexandra Rohloff who fired into the empty cage.
However, Nazareth did not let the momentum swing in favor of the Cardinals as they answered almost immediately. Christine Belding tied the game at 1-1 with a header goal off of a corner kick from teammate Elizabeth Howell.
Those would be the only two goals scored in the match, as an additional 20 minutes of golden goal soccer could not determine a winner.
Nazareth had a majority of the chances early in the game, forcing Fisher goaltender
Sydney DeVitto to come up with huge stops to keep the visitors contained. In the 36th minute the Golden Flyers pelleted DeVitto with a string of three shots, but the senior goalkeeper was able to hold off the rapid fire to keep the board clean. DeVitto finished with five saves in the half.
The Cardinals came out of the halftime strong, with
Val Hanson nearly scoring on a breakaway in the 53rd minute. Hanson took a 45-yard outlet pass from Pilla and, after legging past her defender, fired on Nazareth keeper Carey. Carey was able to make the stop and deny the goal scoring opportunity.
Hanson had another blast from the top of the box, but Carey was there again, this time making a diving stop. She would go on to make eight saves in the game, while DeVitto compiled seven throughout the 110-minute contest.
Hanson and
Heather Konieczny led the Cardinals with three shots, while
Laura Burgstrom and Rohloff both had two.
The Cardinals will next face former Empire 8 foe Rochester Institute of Technology when they travel for an 11 a.m. contest with the Tigers.
