The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team fell to the Ithaca College Bombers, 75-66, in a close battle on Bobby Wanzer Court on Saturday. The loss snaps the Cardinals' five-game winning streak and pushes them to 11-11 and 7-4 in the conference. Ithaca continues to sit atop the Conference, with a 10-1 record, 18-4 overall.
With the score 60-59, the home team was held scoreless for just under five minutes midway through the second stanza, while Ithaca scored seven points to build a small lead. Ultimately, the eight-point gap proved too much for the Cardinals to overcome.
The two teams played tight in the first 20 minutes as well, with Ithaca holding a slim 41-38 lead at the break. Camaryn Buckner set the pace for the Cardinals, putting in 12 points and grabbing five rebounds in the half.
Portia Velasco led all scorers with a career-high 26 points, while also dishing out six assists. Buckner finished with 14 points in the contest and completed the double-double by grabbing 12 boards. The forward also shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Fisher will resume play at 6 p.m. on Friday when they host the Ducks from Stevens Institute of Technology.
