The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team came away with commanding victory on Thursday night, taking down Rochester Institute of Technology by a 75-57 score at SUNY Geneseo. The game was part of the Wendy's College Classic, the nation's longest running in-season tournament, now in its 47th year.
Sydney Bloomstein scored 13 over her career-high 21 points in the first stanza, while also tallying three steals. She would go on to double her steal total in the second half.
In that first half with the score tied at 16s, Fisher took control of the game going on a 10-0 run over a 1:15 span. From that point on, the Cardinals would never trail with the lead growing to as much as 15 points in the half.
The second half was much of the same, with the Fisher lead growing to its biggest at 20 points with 13:33 to go in the game after
Brooke Seavitt scored on a drive through the paint. The Tigers put the pressure on with less than six minutes to play, as the cut the Cardinal lead down to just six points on two separate occasions, but Fisher responded by outscoring its opponent 17-5 over the last 5:01.
Three other Cardinals also scored in double-digits with
Camaryn Buckner and
Mary Kate Cusack tallying 12 points and Seavitt scoring 11. Buckner also grabbed eight boards to lead her team, while Cusack and
Cassie Pope had six.
Free throws played a large part in the game, as Fisher held a 36-16 advantage in opportunities from the charity stripe.
The Cardinals (3-4) will close out Wendy's play at 3 p.m. on Saturday when they face the winner of Nazareth and Roberts Wesleyan. That game will be hosted by Nazareth College and will determine fifth place for the tournament.
