The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team suffered a rare opening round loss to The College at Brockport in the 20th Annual Wendy's College Classic, as the Cardinals dropped a 72-62 decision to the visiting Golden Eagles on Tuesday night.
The loss marks just the fourth time in the 20-year history of the Wendy's College Classic that the Cardinals haven't advanced to the semifinals and is just the fourth time in 45 meetings, Fisher has lost to Brockport in women's basketball.
With the loss, Fisher (2-4) will face Rochester Institute of Technology at 6 p.m. on Thursday at SUNY Geneseo, while Brockport (3-2) will play University of Rochester at 8 p.m. on Thursday at UR. The Yellowjackets defeated R.I.T. 80-53 earlier in the evening at William Smith College.
Fisher jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the game's opening three minutes, but the Golden Eagles battled back and led 17-7 with 9:55 left in the half.
The Cardinals, however, chipped away at the lead and trailed 30-25 at intermission, despite shooting 22.9% (8-for-35) from the floor.
Fisher regained the lead in the opening moments of the second half after a jumper from
Sydney Bloomstein made it 33-32 with 16:56 left. Fisher extended its lead to 41-39 on a deep two-pointer from
Portia Velasco, but the lead didn't last for long.
Brockport went on an 11-0 run over the next five minutes to take the lead for good, as the Golden Eagles shot 50.0% from the floor in the second half and sealed the win at the foul line, making 11 free throws in the final five minutes.
Velasco led Fisher with 19 points and five rebounds, while
Camaryn Buckner scored 12 of her 17 points in the second half, while snagging a season-high 13 rebounds.
Sydney Bloomstein chipped in with nine points, while
Avery Light added five boards, four points, three assists and three steals.
The Wendy's College Classic is the largest and longest-running in-season basketball tournament in the nation.
