The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team dropped a 68-58 decision to host Medaille College on Tuesday night. The Cardinals (0-3) failed to score over the final 4:28, as the Mavericks closed out the game with a 9-0 run.
Fisher never led in the game, but rallied from an 11-point halftime-deficit (37-26) to tie the game at 45s on a 3-pointer from freshman
Mary Kate Cusack with 12:48 left in the contest.
After the Mavericks went up by as many as five, Fisher pulled to within a point on three different occasions, but was never able to the lead.
Sophomore
Portia Velasco, who's two free throws with 4:29 left made it 59-58, led the Cardinals for the third consecutive game, tallying 17 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the floor. She also added four assists.
Cusack added 12 points for the second time in her short career. She also finished with four rebounds and two blocked shots (both career-highs).
Brooke Seavitt added 11 points and six rebounds, while
Camaryn Buckner led Fisher with eight boards.
Avery Light came off the bench and chipped in with six points.
Fisher will return to action at 7 p.m. on Saturday and will host John Jay College in the opening round of the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Invitational.
