Fisher Falls to St. Lawrence at U of R Tournament

The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team fell to 0-2 on the year with an 80-77 loss to St. Lawrence University in its final game of the University of Rochester Tournament. 
 
After trailing by 16 points just under 18 minutes in to the game, Fisher rallied to tie things up at 38-38 on a jumper from Claire Walsh with 2:19 to go in the half.  The Saints broke out the their largest lead in the game with a 17-point run with Fisher up 7-6 early, making the score 23-7.
 
The game would be tied at 42 and 43 before the end of the first stanza, before St. Lawrence added two points to make the game 45-43 heading into the locker rooms. 
 
Fisher kept the game close in the second half, eventually taking control of the game with exactly seven minutes to go on a jumper from the elbow by Brooke Seavitt.  From that point on, the game was within four points for the remainder, with Portia Velasco hitting a pull-up triple with 13 seconds to go, pulling Fisher within one point at 78-77. 
 
After St. Lawrence hit two free throws to make the difference three, the Cardinals had a chance at the buzzer, but Sydney Bloomstein's three-point attempt fell just short.
 
Velasco, who was named to the All-Tournament team, finished with a team-high 23 points while also adding four steals and three assists.  Camaryn Buckner was just behind, racking up 22 points and grabbing five rebounds.  Seavitt led Fisher with five assists, while she and Avery Light both had seven points and three steals.
 
The Cardinals will return to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday night when they travel to face Medaille College.
