Women's Soccer Clinches Postseason Bid with Win over Elmira

Box Score

The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team clinched an Empire 8 Conference Championship bid with a 1-0 win over Elmira College on Senior Day.  With the win on Saturday, Fisher improves to 6-4-4 on the year and, more importantly, 3-0-3 in the Empire 8, guaranteeing the Cardinals a spot in the postseason. Elmira falls to 4-8-1 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

Chelsea Oberkrieser scored the game's only goal, finally capitalizing after she had put continuous pressure on the Elmira defense.  Oberkrieser netted the game-winner in the 29th minute when she tracked down a Kaylee Gebhardt pass, tapped the ball around the Soaring Eagle goalkeeper, and hit the back of the net on a tough angle shot.

Fisher dominated throughout, holding the visitors without a shot until the 49th minute of the game.  The Cardinal defense did not allow a shot on goal until the 64th minute, with Jessica Plukas making one of the two Fisher saves at that time.  Plukas recorded both saves for Fisher, as she and Sydney DeVitto split time to combine for the shutout.

Oberkrieser led Fisher with five shots, while Laura Burgstrom and Kristen Zimmer both had two.

The Cardinals will finish the rest of the 2012 season on the road, as they next travel to face Houghton College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
