The St. John Fisher College women's basketball used a 12-0 run over the final minutes of play to
defeat the Elmira College Soaring Eagles 71-62 in Empire 8 action Friday night in Elmira.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 7-6 in conference and 12-9 overall, while the Soaring Eagles fall to 4-16 overall and 2-9 in Empire 8 play.
After trading leads for most of the first half, Fisher took a 31-29 lead in the locker room.
The Cardinals went up by as much as nine points midway through the second half, but Elmira was able to bring the game back to even ground with 6:28 left to go, and took the lead by one with 5:43 left. Despite the Soaring Eagles' effort, the Cardinals fired up the engines and went on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to maintain the lead for good.
Colleen Maloney and
Mary Kate Comfort each recorded 20 points in the win.
Elmira was led by Becky Peterman, who recorded 20 points as well.
Fisher returns to action when it hosts the Alfred University Saxons at Manning & Napier Varsity Gym on Tuesday, February 9. Action begins at 6 p.m.
