Women's Basketball Clinches Conference Win Over Alfred

Stephanie Sweeney tallied 11 points and a team-best nine rebounds in the win.
Despite a tight-knit game that rarely saw more than a six-point lead by either team, the St. John Fisher College women's basketball team was able to pull ahead in the second half to earn a 64-54 victory over the hosting Alfred Saxons.

The Saxons kicked off scoring with a 6-0 run over the first three and a half minutes of play, but it was the largest lead they would see all game.  The Cardinals tied the score at 8-8 off a good foul shot from Kristen Taliento, and the game would hit its fifth tie before Fisher took the lead for the rest of the half, going into the locker room with a one-point advantage, 31-30.

The Saxons regained the lead in the first minute of the second half, but after the Cardinals tied the score back up at 35-35, they never looked back.  Earning as much as an eight-point lead, the teams still stayed interlocked, but despite the Saxons bringing the game to a 51-51 tie with 4:55 to go, they could not capitalize.  Fisher held the lead for the rest of the game.

Amanda Lax led all scorers, shooting 6-for-8 from the floor with 16 points and three assists, while Stephanie Sweeney chipped in with 11 points and a team-best nine rebounds.

The Cardinals improve to 3-1 in the Empire 8 and 6-3 overall with the win.  Fisher continues its streak of five conference contests over the course of a week when it travels to Utica on Friday to take on the Pioneers.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
