Despite bringing the game to within five points in the final minute of play, the No. 3 St. John Fisher College Cardinals couldn't catch up to the #2 University of Rochester Yellowjackets in the semifinal of the Wendy's College Classic Thursday night at Rochester's Palestra,
falling 68-58.
Rochester took a 43-29 lead into the locker room at the half. The Yellowjackets held as much as a 16-point lead during the first half, with Fisher never coming closer than 10 in the final nine minutes. Rochester's Melissa Alwardt had 15 of her 24 points in the first half to lead the 'Jackets, while
Mary Kate Comfort led the Cardinals with nine first-half points.
Rochester's greatest lead came with eleven minutes left in the second half, the Yellowjackets gaining a 19-point advantage over the Cardinals. Fisher outshot Rochester in the second half, but several missed opportunities for layups cost the Cardinals the game.
Colleen Maloney led Fisher with 15 points.
Meghan Soja and
Mary Kate Comfort each tallied double digit figures as well.
Rochester was led by Alwardt, who tallied 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
With the loss, Fisher falls to 7-6 on the season. Rochester improves to 11-2.
The Cardinals will face the Brockport Golden Eagles in the contest for the third place spot on Saturday at Rochester's Palestra. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
