The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team
defeated the visiting Stevens Ducks 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. Fisher had to play from behind at the start as it gave up a goal in the first 1:15. But the task was not daunting enough as the Cardinals shot back with four unanswered goals the rest of the way. With the win the Cardinals improve to over .500 in the Empire 8 Conference at 4-3-0 (overall 5-7-1).
The day belonged to Fisher senior
Mary Dougherty who recorded a hat trick. Her first tied the game when
Megan Gee sent a pass that escaped the keeper's reach and Dougherty put it in the open net. The midfielder's second goal put the Cardinals up by two when she fired a shot from 37 yards away and just out of the goalie's reach. Just a few minutes later Dougherty struck again, heading a rebounded
Kaitlin Moran shot right back at the goalie for a score.
Sitting at 1-1 after the first period, Fisher had many opportunities to take the lead in the second half, capitalizing 25 minutes in. Junior
Sarah Bihl scored the winning goal by tapping the ball out in front at midfield and outrunning two defenders to gather the ball and juke past the goalie for an easy score.
Fisher will return to action next Saturday when they host Clarkson University at 3 p.m. The game is the middle of a Fisher triple header, with men's soccer starting at 12 p.m. and football kicking off at 7 p.m.
