The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team came through with a 64-61 win at Elmira College on Sunday. With the win, Fisher improves to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the Empire 8 Conference.
Fisher trailed by one at 27-26 at intermission (the first half featured nine lead-changes and five ties), but scored seven of the second-half's first eight points to take control.
Elmira regained the lead at 38-37 with 12:23 left, but the Cardinals answered with 9-2 run over the next two minutes to take the lead for good. Fisher had its lead trimmed from eight points down to three in the final moments after back-to-back 3-pointers from the Soaring Eagles. Junior center #
Mary Kate Comfort# sealed the win though, blocking an Elmira shot and grabbing the rebound on the game's final possession.
Stephanie Sweeney led the Cardinals with a career-high 18 points. She also finished with seven steals, tying her career-high, and added three assists. Freshman #
Kristi Jeffres# also scored a career-high 15 points, while
Comfort finished with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Fisher will return to action at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday in the opening round of the JPMorgan Chase Scholarship Tournament. The Cardinals are the No. 2 seed in the eight-team tournament and will play No. 7 Rochester Institute of Technology at Nazareth College in the opening round.
