St. John Fisher College’s Emily Markarian (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) of the field hockey team has been named as the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for the week ending September 14, 2014.

Markarian recorded the first hat trick in the history of the four-year program to lead the Cardinals to a 5-3 victory over visiting Stevens Institute of Technology in the Empire 8 Conference opener on Saturday.

The freshman opened the scoring in the seventh minute, taking a rebound to the back of the net. After Stevens evened out the score at one apiece, Markarian gave Fisher the lead once again with her second goal of the day. The forward notched the game-winning goal in the 50th minute to complete the hat trick.

Fisher snapped the Ducks’ 20-game Empire 8 regular-season winning streak dating back to Sept. 24, 2011.

The Cardinals also defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 2-1 on Sunday to improve to 1-3 all-time against the Engineers.

Markarian leads Fisher in shots and shots on goal, and remains tied for second in goals.

Fisher (4-2) returns to Growney Stadium at 11 a.m. Saturday against visiting Ithaca College.
