St. John Fisher College’s Sean Osterman, a junior on the baseball team, has been named the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 1, 2012.
In a 3-0 week for the Cardinals, Osterman went 5-for-10 at the plate (.500) while earning a .538 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage of 1.000.
The week started with a nine-inning contest with the University of Rochester, in which Osterman went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored in the 9-4 win. Most impressively, the junior was just a double short of hitting for the cycle. Osterman collected a triple and hit a bomb over the 400 foot fence in centerfield of Fisher’s Dugan Yard.
In a 6-5 win over Utica College in the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader the two teams needed a few extra innings to decide an outcome. Osterman was essential in the game, scoring the game-tying run with Fisher down to its last out in the 10th inning after reaching when he was hit by a pitch. In the top of the 11th Osterman turned a double play from centerfield when he caught a fly ball and then threw out a runner at home when the Pioneer was trying to tag. The Pittsford native was not done though, hitting a walk-off single to score Peter Krysztof and gain the win.
Osterman currently ranks in the top five in several categories for the Cardinals. He is third in stolen bases (14), fourth in slugging percentage (.642) and RBI (18) while ranking fifth in on-base percentage (.476) and runs scored (20).
Fisher will return to action at 3 p.m. on Wednesday when its hosts SUNY Cortland, pitting what the publication Collegiate Baseball called the top two teams in the New York Region before the season began.
