St. John Fisher College’s Tim Sylvester (Rush-Henrietta/Rush) of the baseball team has been named as the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending May 1, 2011. He was also named as the Empire 8 Pitcher of the Week.
In a 5-0 week that helped the Cardinals clinch the Empire 8 Conference title for the second straight year, Sylvester posted a 2-0 record on the mound and also earned his Empire 8-leading third save of the year. He struck out eight batters in 3.1 innings of action with no hits and one walk.
On Saturday, the junior pitcher picked up a save and a win in the Cardinals’ doubleheader-sweep of visiting Rochester Institute of Technology.
Sylvester struck out the side in both the sixth and seventh inning to preserve Fisher’s 7-5 win over the Tigers in game one.
In the second game of the day, Sylvester struck out the one batter he faced in the top of the ninth inning. The Cardinals broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom half of the inning, giving Fisher the 3-2 win.
Sylvester entered Sunday’s first game in the seventh inning with the score tied at 3s and retired all three batters he faced. Fisher scored in the bottom of the seventh for the team’s second consecutive walk-off win.
For the season, Sylvester has pitched in 13 games and has allowed just one earned run (0.50 ERA). He has also struck out 25 batters, while giving up just 10 singles.
After starting the season off 3-4 at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida two months ago, the Cardinals have gone 21-2 in games played above the Mason-Dixon Line and are currently 24-6 overall and 12-2 in the Empire 8 Conference.
