St. John Fisher College has named Ryan Schmidt (Whitesboro/Whitesboro) of the men’s lacrosse team as the College’s Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 4, 2010.
In a 2-0 week for the Cardinals, Schmidt scored seven goals on just 10 shots, while adding two ground balls.
The junior midfielder started the week off by scoring a career-high four goals in Fisher’s 13-4 win over visiting Ithaca College on Wednesday.
On Saturday, the Cardinals came through with an 11-9 win at Hartwick College, with Schmidt totaling three goals, two ground balls and one caused turnover.
With the win over Hartwick, the Cardinals improved to 9-0 on the year, tying the College record for longest winning streak and most wins to start a season. The victory also raised Fisher’s record to 2-0 in the Empire 8 Conference and made the Cardinals just one of four undefeated teams in NCAA Division III.
Schmidt, who has 15 goals in his last five games, ranks second on the team in scoring with 20 goals. He also has three assists on the year.
Fisher, which moved up two spots to No. 13 in the latest national coaches poll, will look to pick up its 10th straight win at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, as the Cardinals host Keuka College.
