Field Hockey Falls To Oswego In Shootout

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher field hockey team dropped a 2-1 shootout decision to Oswego State on Wednesday at Growney Stadium. The Cardinals and Lakers were tied at 1-1 through regulation and two overtime periods before Oswego secured the win in the shootout. Fisher moves to 3-4 overall while Oswego improved to 4-3.

How It Happened

The first three quarters featured strong defensive play from both teams. Fisher created several opportunities throughout the opening 45 minutes, recording nine shots and earning seven penalty corners.

The action picked up in the fourth quarter, with Oswego striking first just over three minutes into the period. Gabby Curtis found the back of the cage to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.

Fisher responded nine minutes into the quarter when junior attack Avery McLaughlin found senior midfielder Mary Kate McPhee, who buried a shot to even the score at 1-1.

Neither team could find the go-ahead goal before the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime. After 10 minutes of play, the score remained tied at 1-1, with the Cardinals recording three shots during the first overtime period.

The second overtime period also ended without a goal, sending the game to a shootout.

McPhee opened the shootout for Fisher and converted her attempt to give the Cardinals an early 1-0 advantage. Oswego missed its next four attempts, giving Fisher a chance to secure the win on its final attempt.

Julia Unger converted Oswego's fifth attempt to even the shootout at 1-1 and force a sudden-death round. Unger scored again on Oswego's first sudden-death attempt before McPhee converted for Fisher to tie the shootout once again.

Oswego's Alexa Snyder then found the back of the cage, putting the pressure back on Fisher. Freshman defender Evelyn Ryan took the Cardinals' attempt, but Oswego goalkeeper Sam Krautheim made the save to secure the win for the Lakers.
